If you’re planning to study abroad, one of the essential requirements is speaking fluently and writing effectively in the English language. To analyse your ability to listen, read, write and speak in English, you are expected to take a recognised English test such as IELTS.

The IELTS or International English Language Testing System is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English. It was developed to help you study, work or migrate to a country where the inhabitants are majorly native English speakers.

Getting a higher score in this exam can help increase your chances of studying abroad at top universities.

How does IELTS impact your chances of studying abroad?

If you plan to study in a country where English is the native language, all communication with professors, peers, friends, textual learning, etc., will be done in English. That being said, it adds to your benefit while integrating into an English-speaking community and also landing the perfect job opportunity after your studies.

Proof of English language proficiency is mandatory for international students planning to study and work abroad. Some institutions may waive the English test requirement, if you submit a letter obtained from your previous university or college stating that your language of instruction was in English.

The IELTS test and how it works

IELTS Modules

This exam has four sections based on listening, reading, writing and speaking.

  1. Listening
The first session of this exam consists of four parts, each with a slot of 10 questions. This session requires that you listen to an audio recording and answer the questions asked. You get a timeframe of 30 minutes until you move on to the next section, that is, the reading test.

  2. Reading
The second section of this exam requires that you read short question-answers, summary, complete sentences, true or false, answer multiple-choice questions, etc. You get a total of 60 minutes to complete the 40 questions asked. You will receive three texts with around 2000-2500 words, the content of which is different for academic and general training.

  3. Writing
We come to the third section of the exam. This section includes two tasks that last for 60 minutes. The first task should contain a minimum of 150 words, and the second task, a minimum of 250 words. You may be asked to explain a chart or bar diagram in the written format, write an essay or a letter, etc. Again, the questions asked will differ from academic or general training.

  4. Speaking
The last section consists of three verbal interviews. The first interview requires that you introduce yourself by communicating in the English language, and the second task requires that you talk about a given topic for 1-2 minutes. Finally, the third topic will include communicating in a two-way discussion with the interviewer about topics assigned to you during the exam.

The exam concludes with the IELTS band score that will determine your competency in the English language. The scores are between 0 to 9, 0 being the lowest and 9 being the highest.
